Haptoglobin
Haptoglobin is a protein that binds free hemoglobin released when red blood cells break down, helping your body recycle iron and protect tissues. A haptoglobin test is often used to look for signs of red blood cell destruction.
Haptoglobin is relevant to iron because it captures hemoglobin from ruptured red blood cells so the iron can be salvaged rather than lost. It's especially useful in evaluating hemolysis, where red cells break down faster than normal. It's typically interpreted with other markers of red blood cell turnover.
A high haptoglobin can occur with inflammation, infection, or certain other conditions, since it also behaves as an acute-phase protein. Because of this, an elevated value may reflect an inflammatory state rather than anything specific to red blood cells. It's best read in context with your symptoms and other labs.
A low haptoglobin can suggest that red blood cells are breaking down (hemolysis), because the protein gets used up binding the released hemoglobin. Liver conditions can also lower it, so context matters.
