What does a CRP blood test measure?

C-reactive protein is an acute-phase protein, meaning a protein the liver makes far more of during inflammation. Its production is driven mainly by interleukin-6 (IL-6), an inflammatory signaling molecule that immune cells release when they detect infection, injury, or tissue damage. When IL-6 rises, the liver ramps up CRP; when the trigger fades, IL-6 falls and CRP production stops. 1

That link to real-time signaling is why CRP moves so fast and so far. Levels can climb from under 1 mg/L to several hundred within a day or two of a serious inflammatory hit, then fall back over the following days once it resolves. 1

What is a normal CRP level?

For standard CRP, most US labs treat anything under 10 mg/L as within normal limits 3, and most healthy adults sit under 3 mg/L. Some US labs report the same test in mg/dL, where under 1.0 mg/dL equals under 10 mg/L. Above 10 mg/L a result is flagged high, and the higher it climbs the more it suggests significant inflammation or infection.

What causes a high CRP?

Anything that sets off inflammation can raise CRP. The usual drivers, from biggest spikes to smallest:

  • Infection, especially bacterial infection, which produces the highest CRP values; viral infections tend to raise it less.
  • Injury or trauma, including burns and fractures.
  • Recent surgery, which reliably pushes CRP up for several days as tissue heals.
  • Autoimmune flares, where the immune system attacks the body's own tissue, as in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Lower, steady lifts from obesity, smoking, and older age, which nudge baseline CRP up without a single acute cause.

Because these causes overlap in the numbers they produce, CRP alone cannot tell them apart. A value of 40 mg/L looks the same whether it comes from pneumonia or a flare of inflammatory bowel disease; the context and other tests separate them. 2

Is a high CRP serious?

It depends on how high the number is and how you feel. A modest rise in the 3 to 10 mg/L range often comes from something minor or chronic and is not an emergency by itself. A markedly high CRP, into the hundreds, usually means a significant infection or major tissue injury and needs prompt medical attention. 1

How the test is done, and when to retest

A CRP test is a standard blood draw with no fasting needed. It can be ordered on its own or as part of a broader panel, and it is inexpensive and widely available. There is no routine recommendation to screen healthy, symptom-free people with standard CRP; it earns its place when there is a reason to check for or track inflammation.

Retesting is usually about watching a known problem settle. A clinician might recheck CRP over days to see whether an infection is responding to treatment or an autoimmune flare is calming down, because the marker falls quickly once the inflammation eases. If your real question is heart risk rather than active inflammation, the test to ask about is hs-CRP, not repeated standard CRP.

Where CRP sits among inflammation markers

CRP is the fast, direct member of a small family of inflammation blood tests, part of the broader inflammation topic.
