01What the research program is
LifeFrom runs consented research studies. A research buyer, such as a company building health AI, a pharmaceutical team or an academic group, commissions a study. We invite members who match it, and those who agree share specific, de-identified data from their LifeFrom record for that study and complete its tasks. The buyer pays LifeFrom, and LifeFrom pays the participants.
These terms add to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Where they differ, these terms govern your participation in the research program.
02Your choice, study by study
- Joining the program does not share anything. It puts you on a list we invite people from when a study matches them.
- Each study asks you separately. Before anything is shared, you see the study, who it is for, what data it uses, what you would do, what you would be paid, and how long it runs. Nothing is shared until you agree to that study.
- Saying no costs you nothing. You can decline any study, or never join one. Your access to LifeFrom does not depend on it.
- You can leave any time. Leaving a study stops any further sharing for it.
03What is shared, and with whom
Each study names the categories of data it uses, for example wearable readings, lab results you uploaded, answers to its questions, or the timing of things you logged. Only those categories are shared, and only for the period the study covers.
- De-identified first. We remove your name, contact details, exact dates of birth, precise locations and other direct identifiers, and replace your identity with a study-specific code. Free text and images are reviewed before sharing.
- Named buyers. Each study names the buyer, or the buyer category and a current list of buyers, in its consent.
- Contractual limits. Buyers must agree in writing not to attempt to re-identify anyone, not to resell the data, to use it only for the purpose described in the study, and to keep it secure.
- Apple Health data is shared only for medical research purposes, with your express consent, and never with data brokers or information resellers.
De-identification greatly reduces, but cannot fully remove, the chance that someone could link data back to a person. We tell you about that risk in each study’s consent.
04Ethics review
Studies are reviewed and approved by an independent ethics review board before we invite anyone, and run under an approved protocol. Each study’s consent names the board that reviewed it.
05How you are paid
- Per task. Each study lists what it pays for each task, such as uploading a lab panel, a check-in on a given day, or a period of wearable data. Pay depends on the study; amounts shown in the app are examples until a study offers them.
- What the wallet shows. Your research wallet lists the tasks you have completed and what each one earned. It is a record of what we owe you, not a stored balance or an account.
- How it reaches you. We pay out through a payments partner, as a prepaid Visa card, PayPal or a gift card, usually monthly.
- It is research compensation. It is payment for your time and participation in a study, not a sale of your data by you. Depending on where you live and how much you receive, it may be taxable income, and we may need your tax details to pay amounts above legal reporting thresholds.
- Fair use. One person, one identity and one payout account. Studies may check that uploaded documents are genuine. We may withhold payment for tasks completed dishonestly.
06Who can take part
You must be 18 or older and a LifeFrom member. Our first studies are open to residents of the United States, excluding Washington, Nevada, Texas and Maryland, whose laws on health data need study-specific arrangements we do not yet offer. We will update this list as studies open elsewhere.
California residents: before any medical information is disclosed for a study, we ask for your written authorization in the form California law requires, and you may revoke it at any time. This payment is a financial incentive; each study’s consent explains how its value was set.
07Leaving a study, or the program
You can leave a study, or the whole program, from the app or by emailing julian@lifefrom.ai. When you leave, we stop sharing any further data for that study. Data already delivered to a buyer before you left cannot always be recalled, because it has been de-identified and combined with others’ data; the study’s consent explains what happens in its case. You keep what you earned for tasks you completed.
Leaving the program does not change anything else about your LifeFrom account.
08Not medical care
Taking part in a study is not medical care, and LifeFrom does not supply, choose or change any medicine for you as part of a study. If a study includes a lab test, its consent explains who orders it and how abnormal results are followed up. Our Medical Disclaimer still applies.
09Changes and contact
We may update these terms; studies you have already agreed to keep the terms they were offered under unless you agree otherwise. Questions about the research program: julian@lifefrom.ai, or Harvest Sterling LLC, Attn: Research, 30 N Gould St, STE R, Sheridan, WY 82801.
