Fragmented Red Cells
Fragmented red cells, also called schistocytes, are pieces of red blood cells that have been physically broken apart within the bloodstream. They are identified by their irregular, jagged shapes.
The presence of fragmented red cells suggests that something is mechanically shearing or damaging red cells as they circulate, which can be an important clue. This finding often prompts a technologist to examine the blood smear carefully, since morphology review is central to confirming it. It is interpreted alongside other blood counts and clinical information.
An increased number of fragmented red cells can accompany conditions where red cells are being physically damaged in the circulation, some of which need prompt evaluation. Because this is a meaningful finding, it usually leads to a careful smear review and further testing. Your clinician will interpret it in the context of your full blood picture and symptoms.
Few or no fragmented red cells is the normal and expected finding, and is reassuring.
