Red Blood Cell Count
Your red blood cell (RBC) count measures how many oxygen-carrying cells are in a given volume of your blood. These are the most numerous cells in your bloodstream.
Red blood cells ferry oxygen from your lungs to every tissue and carry carbon dioxide back out, so their number is central to how well your body is oxygenated. The RBC count is a foundational piece of the complete blood count and helps flag anemia or an overproduction of cells.
An above-range RBC count can reflect dehydration (which concentrates the blood), living at high altitude, smoking, or lung and heart conditions that prompt your body to make more cells. Less commonly, it signals a bone marrow disorder that overproduces red cells, so context and repeat testing help clarify the cause.
A below-range count often points to anemia from causes such as blood loss, iron or vitamin deficiency, chronic disease, or reduced production in the bone marrow.
Typical adult ranges differ by sex and lab, roughly 4.2-5.4 million cells per microliter for women and 4.7-6.1 million for men. Treat these as a starting point and let your clinician interpret it with your hemoglobin and other indices.
