Creatine Kinase Total
Creatine kinase (CK) total is an enzyme found mainly in your muscles, heart, and brain. When these tissues are damaged, CK is released into the blood and the total test measures the overall amount.
Because CK rises when muscle tissue is injured, it can help clinicians investigate muscle-related symptoms like pain or weakness. It is also used to monitor conditions or medications that can affect muscles. Since several tissues contain CK, the total value is often interpreted alongside more specific tests.
A high total CK usually reflects muscle injury, which can come from strenuous exercise, injury, certain medications, or muscle disorders. It does not by itself say which tissue is involved. Your clinician may order fractionated tests or repeat the measurement to clarify the cause.
A low CK is usually not a health concern and can simply reflect low muscle mass. It rarely requires action on its own.
A value within the normal range is typical when there is no significant muscle injury. Recent intense exercise can raise it temporarily, so your clinician will interpret the result in context.
