Troponin I (High-Sensitivity)
High-sensitivity troponin I (hs-troponin I) is a protein found in heart muscle that leaks into the blood when heart cells are injured. The high-sensitivity test can detect very small amounts.
Troponin is a key marker doctors use to evaluate possible heart-muscle damage, such as during a suspected heart attack. Even small changes can be meaningful, so it is usually measured more than once over time. This is primarily an acute test interpreted in a clinical setting, not a routine wellness screen.
An elevated hs-troponin I suggests injury to heart muscle, but the cause can range from a heart attack to other strains on the heart such as infection, kidney disease, or intense exertion. Because it is usually a time-sensitive, clinical-context test, results are read alongside symptoms, an ECG, and repeat measurements. A single value out of context should not be interpreted on its own.
A low or undetectable troponin is the normal, expected finding and generally means no significant heart-muscle injury was detected at that moment. This is reassuring.
A low value within the normal range is what is typically expected in people without heart-muscle injury. Any troponin result should be interpreted by a clinician in your full clinical context.
