Troponin T (High-Sensitivity)
High-sensitivity troponin T (hs-troponin T) is a heart-muscle protein that enters the bloodstream when the heart is injured. The high-sensitivity assay detects very low concentrations.
Along with troponin I, troponin T is central to assessing possible heart damage, including during evaluation for a heart attack. It is typically measured serially so clinicians can watch for changes over time. This is an acute, clinical-context test rather than a routine wellness check.
An elevated hs-troponin T points to heart-muscle injury, though the underlying cause varies, from a heart attack to kidney disease, heart failure, or other stresses on the heart. Because it is usually ordered in acute settings, it is interpreted with symptoms, an ECG, and repeat testing. A single result should not be judged in isolation.
A low or undetectable troponin T is the expected normal finding and generally indicates no detectable heart-muscle injury at that time. This is reassuring.
A low value within the normal range is typical for people without heart injury. A clinician should interpret any result within your overall clinical picture.
