Oxidized LDL
Oxidized LDL (oxLDL) refers to LDL particles that have been chemically altered by oxidative stress. This modification is thought to be an early, pivotal step in the formation of artery-clogging plaque, and a blood test estimates how much of it is present.
Oxidized LDL is more readily taken up by immune cells in the artery wall, where it fuels the inflammation and foam-cell formation at the heart of atherosclerosis. As an emerging marker, it is measured to explore the oxidative component of your cardiovascular risk that standard cholesterol tests do not capture.
A higher oxidized LDL level can reflect greater oxidative stress on your lipids and has been associated with atherosclerosis and increased cardiovascular risk. Because it is still an emerging measure, an elevated result is best treated as a contributing risk signal rather than a definitive finding.
A lower oxidized LDL level generally suggests less oxidative modification of your LDL and is usually not a concern on its own.
Lower is generally considered more favorable, though reference ranges differ by lab and standardization is still evolving, so interpret any result with a clinician in the context of your full lipid panel and personal risk. This is an advanced, non-routine test typically used to refine an already-detailed risk assessment.
