Urine Creatinine
Creatinine is a waste product from normal muscle activity that your kidneys steadily filter into urine. Its concentration in a urine sample reflects how dilute or concentrated that sample is.
Urine creatinine is used as a reference to make sense of other urine measurements. By comparing a substance like albumin or protein to creatinine, labs can correct for hydration, which is why single-sample ratios can stand in for cumbersome 24-hour collections.
A higher urine creatinine concentration usually just means the sample was more concentrated, often from lower fluid intake. On its own it's rarely a health concern; its main role is as a denominator for ratios like the albumin/creatinine ratio.
A lower urine creatinine concentration usually means the sample was more dilute, such as after drinking a lot of fluid. This is normal variation and mainly affects how other results are interpreted.
A random urine creatinine commonly falls around 20 to 300 mg/dL depending on hydration and muscle mass, so there's no single 'ideal' value. It's most useful as the reference for ratios rather than as a standalone number.
