Androstenedione
Androstenedione is a hormone made by the adrenal glands and the gonads. It serves as a precursor that the body converts into testosterone and estrogen.
Precursor to both testosterone and estrogens. Produced by adrenals and gonads. Elevated in PCOS, CAH, adrenal tumors. Diurnal variation present; AM specimen preferred.
Because it sits upstream of the main sex hormones, androstenedione helps clinicians understand the source of androgen-related symptoms. It is often measured alongside other androgens when evaluating symptoms such as excess hair growth, acne, or irregular periods, or to help investigate conditions of the adrenal glands or ovaries. Levels vary with age, sex, and the menstrual cycle.
An elevated androstenedione may reflect increased androgen production from the ovaries or adrenal glands, as can occur in polycystic ovary syndrome or certain adrenal conditions. It is interpreted together with other hormones and your symptoms rather than in isolation.
A low androstenedione is generally less of a concern and can be seen with reduced adrenal or gonadal hormone production.
Androstenedione is compared to age- and sex-specific reference ranges, and in menstruating people the cycle timing can matter. Interpret your value alongside related hormones with your clinician.
