Pregnenolone
Pregnenolone is a steroid hormone made from cholesterol, mainly in the adrenal glands. It is the earliest building block from which many other steroid hormones are formed.

Because pregnenolone sits at the very start of the steroid hormone pathway, it can be converted into cortisol, aldosterone, and sex hormones. Measuring it is uncommon and usually reserved for investigating specific enzyme blocks in that pathway, often as part of a broader hormone workup. On its own it is rarely informative, which is why it is interpreted alongside other steroid results.
A high pregnenolone may point toward a block further down the steroid pathway, causing this precursor to accumulate. Such patterns are interpreted together with the other hormones measured in the same panel.
A low pregnenolone is difficult to interpret in isolation and is generally considered only within the context of a full steroid hormone evaluation.
There is no widely used personal target for pregnenolone; it is a specialized test read as part of a larger steroid panel. Its meaning depends on the other hormones measured and your reason for testing, so review it with your clinician.
