Estrone (E1)
Estrone (E1) is one of the three main estrogens and becomes the predominant form of estrogen after menopause. It can be made from androgens in fat tissue and can be converted back and forth with estradiol.
Predominant estrogen post-menopause (adipose aromatization). Less potent than E2. Less commonly ordered than E2.
Because estrone is produced partly in fat tissue and becomes the main estrogen after menopause, it offers insight into estrogen status beyond the reproductive years. It is sometimes measured when evaluating estrogen production in postmenopausal people or unusual hormonal patterns.
Higher estrone can relate to greater body fat, certain hormone therapies, or estrogen-producing conditions, and occasionally to tumors. Its interpretation depends on your sex, menopausal status, and the reason it was measured.
Lower estrone may accompany reduced overall estrogen production, and its meaning depends on your sex and life stage.
Estrone ranges are sex- and age-specific and change substantially around menopause, so there is no universal target. A clinician should interpret your result in the context of your life stage and other hormones.
