Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity
Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC) measures the portion of your blood's iron-carrying capacity that is still empty, the transferrin binding sites not currently holding iron. It represents the 'open seats' available for more iron.
UIBC connects directly to the other iron markers: serum iron (filled seats) plus UIBC (empty seats) together equal TIBC (all seats). Because of this relationship, UIBC helps calculate and cross-check total capacity and transferrin saturation. It adds precision to the overall iron panel rather than standing alone.
A high UIBC means a large share of iron-binding capacity is unused, a pattern often seen when iron is low, as in iron deficiency. Other factors can influence it too, so it's read in context. The relationship to serum iron and TIBC is what makes it informative.
A low UIBC means fewer binding sites are empty, which can occur with iron overload or certain chronic conditions. It's most useful interpreted alongside serum iron and TIBC.
