ApoB/ApoA1 Ratio
This ratio divides your ApoB (a count of artery-clogging particles) by your ApoA1 (a measure of protective HDL particles), summarizing the balance between the particles that deposit cholesterol in arteries and those that help remove it.
Because it weighs harmful particles directly against protective ones in a single number, this ratio can capture cardiovascular risk more completely than either protein alone. It has been studied as a strong predictor of heart attack risk across diverse populations and is less affected by fasting status than a standard cholesterol panel.
A high ratio means atherogenic particles outnumber your protective particles, which is associated with greater risk of heart attack and stroke. It can result from high ApoB, low ApoA1, or both, and often accompanies insulin resistance or an unfavorable metabolic pattern. It is best read alongside ApoB, LDL-C, and your full risk picture rather than alone.
A lower ratio reflects a favorable balance, with protective particles well represented relative to atherogenic ones, and is generally not a cause for concern.
Lower is generally better; broadly, ratios under about 0.7 are often considered favorable and higher values less so, but sex-specific thresholds and your personal risk matter, so interpret the result with a clinician.
